Come, learn about the Japanese concept of "ma" in Tadashi's Butoh, make costumes together, and be part of a group choreography led by Tadashi himself, which will be presented in one of New York Restoration Project's many beautiful community gardens!

This Guest Teacher Lab is divided into two different modules. Modules can be taken separately or together.
This Guest Teacher Lab is open to dancers, body-rooted performers, physical actors of all levels, ages, and capabilities. Modules will explore the following elements and subjects:
MODULE 1
Introduction to Butoh “ma” (12 hrs)
May 3, 6pm – 10pm; May 4 & 5, 10am – 2pm
This lab focuses on Tadashi Endo’s Butoh-ma method which aims to make the invisible visible. ”Ma” is a Japanese concept related to “emptiness” and “space in-between.” It suggests an interval and a consciousness of place. Through these sessions, students will explore this unique concept.
Tadashi Endo is not only teaching how to move but also tries to give a deep view in the way of Butoh and its philosophy. Concentrations of the workshop include:
- Letting the participants experience slowness.
- Concentrating on the feet as an important organ of sight and perception.
- Sensitivity to associated images which should be manifested in movements.
- Reaching inner emptiness. Out of this calmness, it is possible to gain the intensive and clear expression that is well-known in Butoh, Noh, and the Kabuki.
MODULE II
Performance Collaboration & Public Presentation (40 hours)
May 8-12: 6pm-10pm & May 15-17, 6pm-10pm
Public presentation: May 18-19 12pm-4pm
In this 40-hour module, Tadashi aims to create a new collaborative work, based on the Butoh “ma” theory, together with workshop participants. Participants will be exposed to all aspects of making a piece, which can include costume making and technical preparations, and it will culminate in a public presentation at a selected New York Restoration Project community garden. This performance lab will take place as part of LEIMAY’s presenting series OUTSIGHT presented in partnership with NYRP.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Tadashi Endo – Butoh-dancer, choreographer, director of the Butoh-Centre MAMU and artistic director of the Butoh-Festivals MAMU Butoh & Jazz in Göttingen embodies in the truest sense of that word the wisdom of both, the Western and Eastern dance and theatre traditions. After his study as a theatre director at the famous Max-Reinhardt-Seminar in Vienna, he performed in collaboration with jazz musicians. In 1989 he met Kazuo Ohno who already then realized a deep relationship between Endo‘s dance and the Butoh-dance. Since then Tadashi Endo developed his movements to that aesthetic and expressive dance, as you can see today. His dance is like a synthesis of theatre, performance anddance, Tadashi Endo succeeds to express the field of tension between yin and yang, male and female and their everlasting alteration. He is the master of being “in between“, that is Butoh – MA.
