Boston Ballet’s 2017-2018 season begins with Obsidian Tear, a program of contemporary works featuring the North American premiere of Wayne McGregor’s Obsidian Tear and a world premiere by Boston Ballet Resident Choreographer Jorma Elo titled Fifth Symphony of Jean Sibelius.

A co-production with The Royal Ballet, Obsidian Tear expertly balances on the edge of strength and vulnerability with an all-male ensemble. It is set to Finnish composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Lachen verlernt for solo violin and his symphonic poem Nyx.

Fifth Symphony of Jean Sibelius marks the first time Elo couples an entire symphonic piece with the full Company creating a stunning experience of sight and sound.

The program is guest conducted by Daniel Stewart, music director of the Santa Cruz Symphony, and will open with a heart-pounding orchestral performance of Sibelius’ Finlandia.
