LEIMAY Artistic Director Ximena Garnica shares a lecture chronicling the inception and run of the New York Butoh Festival, which ran every other year from 2003-2009. The festival brought many Japanese butoh masters and dancers to the United States for the first time and ran in tandem with New York Butoh Kan Training Initiative. Those formative years of the Festival and Training Initiative led to the cultivation of what is now LEIMAY’s LUDUS. The lecture is a companion to Ximena’s article written for The Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance, a major new volume on butoh history, theory, and practice.
