Dakshina presents Chakra, a hybrid dance that draws on Bharatanatyam, modern dance and martial art form Kalaripayuttu. Chakra tells of the princess Subhadra who elopes with her chosen love and pays the ultimate sacrifice for her courageous decision. By linking violence against women to the larger societal issues in mythology and classical Indian dance, these traditional stories speak poignantly to the politics of our present day.

Chakra builds on Singh’s signature movement style that hybridizes Bharatanatyam with modern dance. The space, dynamics and group energy of modern dance are overlaid with the filigree of rhythmic footwork, hand gestures and interpretive mime to create the company’s distinctive style.
