Young Dancemakers Company, now in its 23rd year as a free summer performing ensemble of New York City teens, creating and touring original work in free performances throughout NYC, has embarked this month on an ambitious, unique composer/choreographer project, involving prominent professional composers teamed with the young creators. The introductory session held July 2nd at the 92Y, resulted in nine teams of professional composers and student choreographers embarking on the students’ original choreographic concepts.

The teen choreographers and professional composers are collaborating now and will continue through the beginning of August, creating and presenting a concert of original choreography by students, with original music by professionals, a unique opportunity for teens, which they are meeting with enthusiasm and earnest endeavor. The completed concert begins touring on July 25th, with its premiere performance in Riverdale, NY. Touring performances follow at Harlem School of the Arts, 92 Y, Flushing Town Hall, Kumble Theater at Long Island University, Symphony Space, University Settlement, culminating at the Ailey Citigroup Theater on August 4th.

Young Dancemakers Company, directed by founder Alice Teirstein, with Associate Director Jessica Gaynor and Music Director William Catanzaro, consists of 14 NYC teens selected by audition from 11 NYC public high schools and 1 YDC alum returning as intern/stage manager. In addition to the 9 original student dances set to the original scores by the professional collaborating composers, the concert includes a guest repertory project by choreographer Jane Comfort.
