Founded  in  1969  by legendary  New York  City  Ballet  Principal  Dancer  Arthur  Mitchell and his former teacher  and mentor,  the late  Karel  Shook  (1920  – 1985),  and in  response  to the assassination of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dance Theatre of Harlem was created with the primary goal of providing  access  to  the  art  form  of  classical  ballet  to  people  of  all  ethnic  and socioeconomic backgrounds.  DTH  quickly  grew  into  a globally-acclaimed  dance institution  that has  occupied  a distinguished place in New York City’s cultural landscape and at the forefront of artistic achievement for 48 years.
