The Company Celebrates Its 21st Season

Young Dancemakers Company is a unique, free summer dance ensemble of NYC teens dedicated to creating their own original choreography and performing it in free touring concerts city-wide, for audiences of up to 2000 young people and adults each season. Company members, selected annually by audition, are drawn from throughout the NYC public high schools.

Directed by Bessie award winner Alice Teirstein, the company of teen dancers, is entering its 21st season, made possible by generous foundation funding. Since June 29th, the company has been busy creating a concert of their own choreography, based on meaningful personal and social themes, mentored by Director Alice Teirstein, Associate Director Jessica Gaynor, Music Director William Catanzaro and Costume Designer Wendy Phillips.

Every year the ensemble also learns a dance by a noted choreographer, and this year they are learning an excerpt from Battlefield by choreographer Robert Battle, Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The work will be set by Tyler Gilstrap, an original member of Battleworks. Past years have featured dances by Mark Morris, Jose Limon, Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor and others.

Other season highlights include a partnering workshop with Art and Myrna of Bridgman|Packer Dance, a Bob Fosse class taught by Peter Yuen, a College Seminar with many local colleges and universities, pre-season concert outings to The Joyce Theater, The Kitchen and The 92nd Street Y, as well as a just-for-fun swim day at The Fieldston pool.
