ABT and NYCB Dancers Shine in B Michael's Designs

Principal dancer Chase Finlay and Youth America Grand Prix alumna and soloist Lauren Lovette, both of New York City Ballet, participated in YAGP’s “The Making of a Costume” panel and performed an original pas de deux. Barbara Brandt explored the dynamics of costume design, from concept to creation, with fashion designer B Michael and choreographer Andrea Schermoly on Monday, February 9, 2015, in the intimate rehearsal Studio 5 at New York City Center.

The evening began with Barbara Brandt asking Chase Finlay and Lauren Lovette the question “What do you hope to find in a costume?” and continued with hilarious costume disaster stories. Finlay recalled a past performance where his hat kept falling, and since the show must go on, he tossed it as though it was part of his choreography.

Next, Brandt presented choreographer Schermoly, who introduced her piece, Closure. Finally, B Michael came out to discuss the difference between designing couture versus costumes, before showing the crowd how to properly pin a muslin. Brandt asked him how every design is started to which he responded “with a good mood and a few sketches.” He designed the shimmering red, silver and gold costumes worn by the dancers.

After the performance, B Michael presented a one of a kind tutu, modeled by Corps de Ballet dancer at American Ballet Theatre and YAGP Alumna, Catherine Hurlin, which was then auctioned off by board member Richard Osterweil. Michael Weil, who won the auction, generously donated the tutu to Hurlin. Proceeds from the event will provide much needed scholarships for talented dancers. An intimate reception followed the discussion where dancers, designers, and guests raved about the fabulous evening.
