For dance lovers everywhere: Baryshnikov’s Nutcracker — starring Mikhail Baryshnikov (Prince), Gelsey Kirkland (Clara), Alexander Minz (Uncle Drosselmeyer) and the American Ballet Theatre — is available for streaming/download on Prime Video (Amazon). Directed by Tony Charmoli, Designed by Boris Aronson, the 78-minute film premiered on CBS (1977), garnered four Emmy nominations, and became the 3rd highest selling cultural program in the home video era.

The  cast features Gregory Osborne (Harlequin); George de la Pena (Moor), who later played Nijinsky in the feature film; Marcos Paredes (King of Mice); Robert La Fosse (Toy Soldier), now a choreographer; Rebecca Wright (Doll); Jolinda Menendez and Clark Tippet (Spanish Dance); Ruth Mayer, Richard Schafer, Frank Smith Victor Barbee, Janet Shibata, Bertha Prieto (some of the Guests).  Among the snowflakes one will find Nancy Collier, Alina Hernandez, Susan Jones, Cheryl Yaeger and Lisa Rinehart, now married to Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The classic score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was conducted by Kenneth Schermerhorn.  Norman Rose narrates this dramatic production, considered by critics “the most romantic version ever”.
