Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects

Jody Oberfelder Jody Oberfelder is known for her inventive choreography and daring, acrobatic movements. In previous work, Oberfelder has implemented surprisingly nontraditional elements, from props — one piece featured dancers bowling with potatoes — to unusual sets and unexpected arrays of musical accompaniment. However, she has earned most critical accolades for the risks she takes in the dancing itself. Backstage writes, "The awesome athleticism and acrobatic partner work of Oberfelder's choreography proves perpetually compelling."

Oberfelder tests the limits of the body as she explores the art of expression through movement. "Jody Oberfelder knows her stuff," says The Village Voice , "She sets her precise, muscular, strongly designed athletic movements in excellently built structures that keep your eyes and mind engaged, and she provides surprises without rambling or digressing."

Jody first discovered movement as a swimmer, springboard diver, and gymnast. After her time at SUNY Purchase, Jody studied dance with Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis, contact improvisation with Nita Little, and performed with Phyllis Lamhut, Ping Chong and Meredith Monk, Pooh Kaye, and Sally Silvers. Beginning with a program at Performance Space 122, which included a raucous solo in a crash helmet, Jody has shown her richly variegated work in countless venues in New York City as well as nationally and internationally in festivals from Serbia to Korea. Currently, Jody is a teaching artist for Lincoln Center Institute and The Orchestra of St. Luke's. She has received commissions from a wide range of schools and institutions for her teaching and residency activities.

Jody's dance films include LineAge, Rapt, Chance Encounters, and Duet. These films have been screened at Dance Theater Workshop in the "Captured Series", in the Dance on Camera Festival, Milan Doc Festival, Visonfest in Tribecs, Festival Internacional de Video-Danza de Buenos Aires, Takoma Park Film Festival, Dance Camera West, ADF Dancing for the Camera, Outvideo in Russia, and the International Festival of Dance and Technology at Arizona State University. LineAge won a People's Choice Award from Cinedans for 2007. For her film Duet she received a Juror's Award from the New York Film Expo and a Silver Award from Dance on Camera. Commercially, Jody has choreographed the 'open' for ABC's Nightline in Primetime-"Brave New World," which won Emmys for Best Design and Graphics and served as a movement coach for Hillary Swank on Guerlain's commercial for their scent "Insolence".
