Summer Snapshot: Martha Williams/The Movement Movement
"I had two shows this summer. The first, "Package Less," was presented at Joyce SoHo June 19 to 23. The second show was "The Sleep of Reason/Bicameral" Chelsea Art Museum (July 18 and August 28)"
On "Package Less"
"The most exciting reactions I received were, “that’s not like any dance I’ve ever seen,” “I was drawn into every moment” and “I want to go home and jump on my couches.” In all the excitement and tension of the piece, I think I really touched on the complexity of male/female relationships, in a both grounded and abstract way. By using couches and an actor, context was created i.e. domesticity, everyday life, men and women. At the same time, “Package Less” was still abstract, because dance by its nature is open to interpretation and I didn’t tie up the story in a nice neat bow. Oh that can be so good and so frustrating, eh?"
On “The Sleep of Reason/Bicameral”
"This show is the brain child of the Zuvuya Collective (www.myspace.com/zcollective), a fun and wacky video-performance group. “The Sleep of Reason/Bicameral” was a culmination of live, mixed video, sound and dance. We (myself and Jen Kosky) were invited to create an improvisational score that moved through the space of the Chelsea Art Museum (July 18 and August 28). We had 5 dancers and 5 mattress (more props). The best part was helping to make the video which was mixed in the space...we went to Jen’s parents pool and shot footage of Jen underwater. I was able to film some of it which was a superbly fun experience for me and in line with all my next art moves. Also we got footage of me submerging into the pool wearing business attire and eating a sandwich underwater. Shall I say more?"
