PHILADELPHIA, PA: Fall Series 2016: "Sunset, o639 Hours"
BalletX, Philadelphia's Premier Contemporary Ballet Company, kicks off its 11th Season with the one and only "Sunset, o639 Hours," created by choreographer and BalletX Co-Founder Matthew Neenan and award-winning New Zealand composer Rosie Langabeer. Praised by Philadelphia Weekly for taking “Philly dance to heights it’s never experienced before,” this full-length ballet interprets the dramatic, true story of aviation pioneer Captain Edwin Musick’s fateful 1938 airmail flight across the Pacific in a story of love, loss, and adventure. With live music co-written by Langabeer and Andrew Mars, this one-of-a-kind ballet features instruments invented for the production by Neil Feather. "Sunset" immerses audiences in the world of the South Pacific as it weaves together original 1930s-inspired songs, field tapes, and archival recordings from Musick’s flights. Brilliant lighting design by Drew Billiau, timeless costumes by Christine Darch, and enthralling sound design by Nick Kourtides complement inventive sets by Maiko Matsushima to transform the theater into another world. "Sunset, o639 Hours" has touched audiences and dance reviewers alike, who have applauded its “breezily inventive choreography” (The New York Times) and musical score “laced with jazzy tunes and Hawaiian beats as well as the hums of wildlife and roars of engines” (Huffington Post). As praised by The Philadelphia Inquirer, this must-see ballet is “one of the finest works created in the company’s first decade.”
