The Yard announces the expanded return of the popular TapTheYard 2: A Vineyard Festival of Rhythm and Beats, running Thursday, July 25th through Saturday, August 3rd, 2013. This communal festival features some of the best, most innovative tap and percussive dance artists from across the country, moving from diverse tap styles through Irish step dancing to contemporary choreography that looks deep into the soul of African-American Entertainment history.
Acclaimed artists such as David Parker, Jeff Kazin and the BANG Group; Jason Samuels Smith; Michelle Dorrance and Dancers; Derick Grant; the Wondertwins; and Camille A. Brown and Dancers, among others, will rock the Vineyard community with their riotous rhythms, wit, improvisations, and challenges in astonishing performances that are simply not to be missed. The festival includes multiple artists on shared evening performances presenting over the course of both weeks, with new artists and productions arriving each evening at The Yard’s Patricia N. Nanon Theater in Chilmark; The Annual Challenge Match Benefit Event on Friday August 2nd, “TapThePAC, Featuring The TTY All Stars,” at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center in Oak Bluffs and will close with a “FamilyTapJam” at 6:30 PM on Saturday, August 3rd, at the Performing Arts Center. In the words of an audience member post-TapTheYard 2012:
“When I am asked what experience truly moved me in the past year, I know right away what it was: it was TapTheYard, Michelle Dorrance. I saw God (atheist that I am) when I saw those dancers perform, and I left the theater feeling that I had been given an incredible gift.”

David Parker, Jeffrey Kazin and the BANG Group, already known to Yard audiences for their percussion and musical theater performances over the past two season, launch the TTY 2 festival month with a three-week company creative residency (in progress now through the first week of the Festival), building new work that will be the centerpiece of the first programs. Parker, now onsite and available for interviews, is a wonderfully inventive artist and also a co-curator of TTY. He is the son of the late Boston-based, Spenser/Jesse Stone/Sunny Randall-loving mystery novelist Robert Parker and the late Joan Parker, a much beloved leader-activist-survivor in the Boston cancer advocacy movement. 2013’s TapTheYard 2 is dedicated to their memory.
