ARTISTS RISING TOGETHER ON THE VINEYARD:

THE YARD’S ANNUAL A.R.T. ON THE VINE PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

ISLAND ARTISTS DANCING TOGETHER.

The Yard’s A.R.T. ON THE VINE (Artists Rising Together on The Vineyard) enters its fifth  year with two programs celebrating some of the artists who make Martha’s Vineyard such a fertile ground for artistic creation. This “mini-festival” within the greater YARD ARTS Summer Season serves to acknowledge and thank these island-based creators. Among them, the Yard’s own artist-staff takes the stage!2

The two programs are:

Island Grown Dances features Vineyard-based choreographers and performers, as well as The Yard’s 2018 artist-interns, in an evening centered on collaboration and community. Yard Artist Educator Leah Crosby and Abby Bender, who directs the island’s beloved Built On Stilts dance festival, share a work they have co-choreographed. A multi-generational group of local dancers perform a work by visiting artist and long-time partner to The Yard Naomi Goldberg Haas of NYC’s Dances for A Variable Population. Finally, The Yard’s incredibly talented artist-interns present “P.O.V,” a work they have been developing collaboratively over the course of their summer internship.

The Yard’s internal dance company of staff and interns, DanceTheYard, is co-directed by Executive Director Alison Manning and Director of Island Programs & Education Jesse Keller Jason. As part of this year’s ART on the VINE festival, DanceTheYard presents two works developed by Manning and Keller Jason in collaboration with company members. “Girl Occupied,” presented in an early stage of creation during Island Grown Dance in 2017, has been expanded from a duet to a quartet. The work developed as a direct response to a fictional story written by Alison Weaver about a young woman’s struggle in the current political climate. A second edition of DanceTheYard’s “Vantage Point” (2016) furthers Manning and Keller Jason’s investigation into perspective, space, and how we react to our surroundings.

SEED. GROW. REAP. REPEAT: THE NATURE OF THE YARD.

Mission:

The Yard supports diverse, contemporary dance-makers and related artists in their creative processes through paid, creative residency, public performance, long-term education, and artist-driven civic engagement. We serve all ages and cultural populations on Martha’s Vineyard, and work collaboratively with artists, producers, and other cultural organizers within regional, national, and international contexts.
