It is my deepest pleasure to be welcomed into the rehearsals of some of the finest artists in our city. What a treat to meet Stefanie Batten Bland and spend an afternoon with her company of beautiful dancers and her multi-talented ( performance artist/visual artist) collaborator Benjamin Heller. Having an intimate history with ballet, Kargman wanted to do her part to burst some of the common stereotypes that exist around the form; for example, that ballet is for rich white kids, that boys in ballet are gay, that young women in ballet are always anorexic, and that stage mothers are consistently obnoxious. “The world behind the scenes of ballet is much more complex and interesting than what meets the eye,” Kargman explains, and she reveals this through the stories of her young dancers, girls and boys, young men and women from different nations, and varied backgrounds who are bound together by a dance form and the desire to excel in it.

This International Dance Day event is organized each year by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) at UNESCO. What is abundantly clear is that ITI's director, Tobias Biancone, his staff and its Dance Committee, give dance an honored place within the context of theatre. Biancone said that we must "fight for dance" and for its place, and that this celebration was a way of doing just that.

Driscoll knows how to make a dance. Her movement is rooted in a post-modern vocabulary and made increasingly more exciting by the dramatic facial expressions that accompany her gestural language. Sexually suggestive movements -pelvic thrusts, inner thigh rubbing, nipple grabs - morph out of provocative seaminess, into the world of slapstick as Driscoll and Zaritt’s facial expressions take the forefront.
