Dancer/choreographer Martita Goshen presents the premiere of "Sanctuary," her final work honoring the legacy, greatness and goodness of the magnificent racehorse Barbaro, who died tragically. The full evening work reflects on the questions of reconciling loss and finding comfort in creating and building our own refuge from the ruins. The photos by Jim Coarse and Michele Spano illuminate the landscape that nurtured Barbaro and the many horses to follow and nurture us in return. Elizabeth Andersen's stunning video interweaves the results of developing a partnership with the racehorse, giving him his freedom and a new life. Two performances, June 16 & 17, 7:30 PM, in the Scripps Studio of the Paul Taylor Dance Studio, 551 Grand Street.
Ten years ago, Goshen became interested in horses and thoroughbred racing. Never one to pursue her passions half-heartedly, Martita delved into that world, researching the backstretch lives and paths to the derby and triple crown of the animals. "Sanctuary" reflects not only Goshen's connection to the environment and the animal world, but her reverence for the remarkable physical power, intelligence, sensitivity, and nobility found in race horses, most especially the late beloved Barbaro (2003-2007).
Goshen was privileged to spend time with Barbaro and was part of the community that worked to save him after the tragic injuries he suffered as a thoroughbred racehorse. "Barbara caused me, along with many others, to pay attention to the possibility of all horses," remarked Goshen. "His spirit was exceptional as he fought valiantly to recover from his near-fatal injury by his desire to live. He was pure of heart. Barbaro leaves a vibrant legacy of inquiry and passion in my life, pointing me clearly to giving voice to the voiceless."
Martita Goshen's work is influenced by her childhood upbringing with the indigenous peoples of Uruguay and Brazil, as the daughter of a U.S. diplomat. There she was profoundly influenced by the dance and music that were part of the village life, and the people's love and reverence for nature. Over the years she has created dances and workshops to inspire respect for Nature and wildlife all over the world. Her company, Earthworks, has performed around the U.S. and toured to Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Canada, and Hawaii, often in connection with such organizations as Greenpeace, the Cousteau Society, the Animal Welfare Institute, and the Center for Environmental Education.
Barbaro was an American thoroughbred who was undefeated going into the 2006 Kentucky Derby. He decisively won the Derby, but shattered his leg two weeks later in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, ending his racing career and eventually leading to his death. A monument and statue honoring the magnificent champion have been placed at the entrance to Churchill Downs.
