BETHESDA, MD - Kalanidhi Dance brings its signature style of classical dance through a contemporary lens to Dance Place with Why We Dance on Saturday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m.and Sunday, February 24 at 4:00 p.m. The production is presented in four movements, each representing one aspect of Kuchipudi that inspires the company to dance. The evening opens with Heritage, a homage to the artistic, cultural, and philosophical lineage that connects each dancer to her roots. Freedom follows next, presenting dance as a respite from the banal and often disconnected nature of daily life. In the third movement, Storytelling, Kuchipudi’s rich dance drama tradition of character and narrative expression is showcased through the mythological tale of “Savitri and Satyavan.” The evening ends with Community, an imaginative interplay of rhythm and pattern that illustrates how dance creates a camaraderie unmatched by any other relationship in life.

The New York Times has called Anuradha Nehru and Chitra Kalyandurg’s choreography “beautiful,” adding “...the developing harmonies of the all-female septet ‘Community,’ were ravishing.” Next month’s performances mark the first time Kalanidhi will perform Why We Dance in its entirety since it debuted the work in 2016 for it 25th anniversary. The company is honored to restage the work as part of Dance Place’s DISCOVER Season - the theatre’s first curated under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Christopher K. Morgan.

Advanced Sales Tickets for Why We Dance are priced at $25 for general admission and $20 for Dance Place members, seniors and artists. Advanced sales end on February 15th, after which prices increase by $5. College Students and Children (17 & under) pay $15. Tickets can be purchased at the Dance Place Box Office, by phone (202) 269-1600 and on their website DancePlace.org.
