The Dance Enthusiast had the pleasure of speaking with dancer/choreographer Vicky Shick and her long-time collaborators as they rehearsed their upcoming SOAKING WET performances at KHDT Dance Studios in Manhattan's lower east side.

Vicky Shick on her Beginnings and Trisha Brown

A former Trisha Brown dancer and an exceptional mover and choreographer in her own right, Vicky Shick joins Elise Kermani, sound artist, and Barbara Kilpatrick, visual designer, in a new project - Miniatures in Detail. This work marks the seventh collaboration of the group of women.Miniatures in Detail has only four dancers, including Shick.

What Moves Vicky Shick?

“This project follows a large-scale piece that we created together (the artists’ previous work, Everything You See, had ten performers) it’s an extraction of going BIG but working smaller, not in intensity, but in scale,” says Kilpatrick, who designed the costumes for the work. Costumes and sound are integral components of Miniatures in Detail. Watching dancers Marilyn Maywald and Omagbitse Omagbemi with Shick in Kilpatrick’s costume confections is a wonder to the eyes and ears. Kilpatrick, who combined found objects, macramé and colorful materials to create her one-of-a-kind designs, remarks  that the costumes also “have odd sounds permeating from them.”

Elise Kermani’s score references Beethoven while enhancing the jingling and whooshing of the costumes. “I’m working backwards a bit,” she says, “looking to our previous works and bringing back sounds into this new project.”

Collaboration on Miniatures in Detail

The intimate setting of the West End Theater also lends itself to the artists' newest creative endeavor. In fact, it may be considered the fourth member of the collaboration. The theater functions as a host to this interweaving of movement, sound, and design, revealing a series of delicately nuanced relationships.

Of collaboration Shick says, “Bouncing off one another’s ideas is extremely helpful and inspiring. It’s much richer and with more laughs.”
