What is DiP?
Dance in Process (DiP) is Gibney Dance’s full-service residency program designed to provide “mid-career” dance artists with the opportunity for creative immersion.
The Dance in Process Resident Artists are a cohort of twelve New York City based, mid-career dance and performance artists. Nine of those artists are selected through an open call process and by a panel that is nominated by the applicants themselves. Two additional artists are selected through partnerships with New York based organizations and one artist is selected by Gibney Dance staff.
Resident Artists will each receive three weeks of exclusive, continuous access to a studio at one of Gibney’s locations, as well as a $7,500 stipend, pending the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. During their season in residence, participating artists will also receive 40 hours of discounted studio space in designated studios, as well as administrative support from Gibney Dance staff.
Selected Resident Artists will be invited to submit a second application to turn one of their three DiP residency weeks into a Production Residency in one of Gibney’s theater spaces. During their Production Residency week, two selected DiP Resident Artists will have access to production equipment and technical assistance. More information will be made available about this process once Resident Artists are selected.
The current DiP application is for the studio residency only. For this reason, please focus your responses on the studio residency.
About the Space
Gibney Dance has seventeen studios across two Manhattan locations. Granted studio space will be large enough to accommodate the needs of working choreographers and companies, but small enough to allow for close and private work. Studios will be assigned by Gibney Dance staff based on need and availability. Artists will also be granted a production office for their use throughout the residency. Each Resident Artist will collaborate with Gibney Dance staff to tailor each residency to fit individual artists’ needs.

Am I Eligible?
DiP is limited to “mid-career” New York City-based dance artists who are in the “mid-stage” of the process for the project.
Gibney Dance defines a “mid-career artist” as one who has established a significant body of work, either in terms of quantity over time or in terms of impact, momentum, or recognition; and the “mid-stage” of a process as the broad period of time after initial research, but prior to pre-production. Gibney Dance defines “New York City-based” as having primary residence in one of the five boroughs of New York City.
While we recognize that these distinctions are limiting, we have designed the DiP residencies specifically for mid-career choreographers with a significant amount of choreographic experience and coordinating capacity. These parameters were designed to ensure that the DiP resources are utilized to their fullest extent.
Residency Scheduling: You must be able to conduct a continuous three-week residency between September 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018. If you know you are not able to participate in the DiP program during this period or you feel that the DiP resources are not applicable to your current project or working process, please do not apply for this round. Please consider applying to the next round of DiP.
What Does DiP Provide?
Space: DiP Resident Artists will receive continuous access to a studio space, and a production office at Gibney Dance at no charge. Additionally, during their residency season, artists will have access to 40 hours of discounted rehearsal space in select Gibney studios.
Time: All DiP Residencies must be three consecutive weeks long. Space will be continuously available seven days a week unless the residency is scheduled at Gibney Dance’s 890 Broadway location in which case the schedule would be: Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 7 pm.
Resources: DiP Resident Artists will select from a Residency Resource Menu consisting of opportunities for public engagement; cultivation events; feedback sessions and mentoring; physical and technical resources; relationship building and technical assistance. View the full resource menu.
Fees: Resident Artists will be provided with a $2,500 stipend per residency week, for a full total of $7,500 pending support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Gibney Dance recognizes that this stipend will most likely not cover all of the Resident Artists’ costs.
What Are The Responsibilities Of The Resident Artists?
Resident Artists must schedule and complete their immersive residency between September 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.
Resident Artists must complete an intake interview with the Director of Performance and Residency Programs, Producer, and Programs Manager and sign a letter of agreement committing to make full use of the allocated time and resources.
Resident Artists are required to participate in an assessment of the DiP experience and its impact at the end of the residency and one year later.
Resident Artists will be asked to rank your preferred residency period as part of this application. Gibney Dance will make every effort to honor your selected residency time frame but can’t guarantee that you will receive your first choice.
There is no required public-facing component of the DiP residency, though we encourage Resident Artists to be involved with the Gibney Dance community throughout their Residency Year in whatever capacity they feel most comfortable with. This can be designed in partnership with Gibney staff.
