Camille A. Brown & Dancers’ (CABD) Mentorship Program – an initiative of CABD’s FREE Social Dance for Social Change School – will pair a next generation Black artist with one of CABD’s accomplished current or former Company Members, who will provide unique one-on-one mentoring sessions, sharing expertise, advice and guidance stemming from their own personal and professional experiences.
Mentee artists will have access to a phenomenal group of CABD Company Members/Alumni – all with rich careers as dancers performing not only with choreographer and director, Camille A. Brown, but such other companies as Rennie Harris PUREMOVEMENT, Kyle Abraham’s A.I. M., David Dorfman Dance, José Navas/Compagnie Flak, PHILADANCO!, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, Parsons Dance, Pilobolus, Robert Moses' KIN, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet; and with leading Pop stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé and theatrical shows, Sleep No More and Queen of the Night. Many have appeared on Broadway in award-winning productions such as Hamilton, Fela! and After Midnight on television and film in Brown’s choreography for Jesus Christ Superstar Live on NBC, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom on Netflix, and HARLEM on Amazon Prime Video respectively. CABD dancers have staged Brown’s work at various universities and have assisted Brown in her work for theater (Broadway’s Once On This Island and for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf,) and opera (The Met Opera’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones and Porgy & Bess). With a wide range of backgrounds, ages and experiences – but all reflecting the diversity of the African diaspora – Company members/alumni have been the recipients of numerous awards and accolades, accumulated distinguished degrees & certifications, founded their own businesses, started community programs in their neighborhoods, and hold faculty positions at well-regarded colleges, universities, conservatories, and training programs. Many have also stepped into extended careers, obtaining professional certifications to help people with fitness, health and mental wellness. All are champions of cultural equity and social justice.
Enthusiastic, genuine, and generous of spirit, CABD Mentors are committed to supporting the next generation of artists, leaders, and creative thinkers – and are excited to be a part of CABD’s new Mentorship program, where they will be an advocate, a sounding board, and a source of encouragement, empowerment and wisdom to participants as they navigate their own creative path.
The CABD Mentorship Program is for those looking for professional development support in pursuit of a career in the arts. Dancers and artists with a strong connection to dance, or have a dance background, between the ages of 18 and 25, are encouraged to apply!
