The Harlem School of the Arts(HSA) 2019 Summer Dance Intensive classes begin on July 8th. The program, created under the auspices of the organization’s dance director, Aubrey Lynch II, is now in its second year.

Before classes begin, students who are interested in the in-person audition process, have two more opportunities to vie for acceptance.  The last New York City audition is scheduled on May 11th from 6:00pm-8: 00 pm at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue.  Submission of digital auditions must be in by May 31 and require that students who are interested send the following:

  • A 3/4 length shot of themselves (head to below the knee), in a Tendu a la Seconde pose.
  • A 1-minute video solo (ballet, contemporary or a modern technique) that shows off classic lines. Movement phrases or class exercises will be accepted, as well as links to YouTube.

This year’s multi-disciplinary experience has been designed for students with at least three years of consistent training (three years of ballet is highly recommended).  The classes will feature instructions in ballet, pointe, contemporary, jazz, Hip-Hop and Afro-Fusion. A hallmark of the Summer Intensive is the weekly artist workshops, featuring some of the most recognized names in dance – superstars of the industry.  Additionally, original work created specifically for the students will be rehearsed before a special, invited guest audience, every Friday.

This year’s list of featured guest artist has worked in every area of dance and with some of the world’s most prestigious companies – they are: Sarita Allen(Alvin Ailey, Complexions Contemporary Ballet); Frank Gatson(choreographer for Beyoncé, Rihanna, Usher, Michael Jackson); Karine Plantadit, (Tony Award nominee dancer and actress, Alvin Ailey);Desmond Richardson(American Ballet Theater, Tony Award nominee for Fosse,co-founder and co-director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet); Stella Abrera Radetsky, (American Ballet Theater principal); Christopher Huggins, (former member of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater); and Renee Robinson, (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater).

Students will attend daily classes taught by an equally impressive list of legendary and accomplished group of dance instructors that include: Terk Lewis, Artist in Residence with Complexions Contemporary Ballet since 2017;Kelly Marsh IV, a current member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet; Aubrey Lynch II, Director of Dance at the Harlem School of the Arts; Ashley Nicole Mayeuxformer member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, now with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet; George W.N. Sanders, currently a member of Ballet Memphis; Ingrid Silva, a native of Brazil who last year celebrated 10-years with Dance Theatre of Harlem; and Da’Von Doane, named 2014 Dance Magazines one of “25 to Watch,” a member of Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble and a rising choreographer.

HSA’s director of Dance, Aubrey Lynch II, a former member of Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theater, known for his work in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway, ups the bar each year to ensure that students who attend the Summer Dance Intensive receive the preparatory incentive that will help them face the demands of higher level dance education and ultimately prepares them to move into a career in dance, if that is what they truly aspire to pursue.

The Summer Dance intensive’s finale, the grand Summer Blaze performance will be held on the last day of class, on August 2nd at the Harlem School of the Arts.
