Creative Process Workshop with Alexandra Amirov, Choreographer Amirov Dance Theater

Join Alexandra Amirov, Artistic Director and Choreographer of Amirov Dance Theater, for a two-hour workshop at The Dance Complex on Sunday, May 13th, 2018 from 11:30AM -1:30PM.

Anchored in Amirov’s approach to movement invention, the workshop will begin with a warm-up focused on alignment, locomotion, and the connection of body to space. Participants will expand their improvisational skills by applying Amirov’s unique movement manipulation and compositional techniques, and learn phrase work from the company’s diverse repertoire. Designed to develop and provoke new relationships between dance, time, duration, and space, the workshop will conclude with an informal presentation of shared creative discoveries and a feedback session.

This workshop is open to the public, geared towards pre-professional dancers and choreographers ages 18 and older. Performance artists and actors are also encouraged to attend!

Cost per Student: $15.00

Alexandra Amirov was born in the Caucasus Mountains of Russia. At five years old, Alexandra and her family moved to Israel, where she studied ballet, synchronized swimming, lyrical gymnastics, and ballroom dancing with the leading Israeli ballroom dance company Tsizapers.

At the age of 18, Alexandra immigrated to the United States and found a home in New York City. In NYC, she joined the renowned Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company, with which she had the opportunity to study and perform Latin dance techniques. After training under the direction of Eddie Torres for six years, Alexandra left the company to pursue higher education. She received her M.A. in Dance in 2013.

Alexandra founded Amirov Dance Theater in 2013. The company’s work has been presented across New York’s five boroughs, including notable venues such as Gibney Dance, The Ailey Citigroup Theater, Dixon Place, The Green Space, Movement Research, The Gowanus Arts Center, The Sheen Center, The Tank, La MaMa Moves, Dumbo Dance Festival, Estrogenius Festival, and The Hudson Guild Theater. In addition to live performance, Amirov Dance Theater’s repertoire comprises movement-based films, including the dance on camera film a_SymMetrics, a work that has been featured at numerous film festivals in Europe and the United States. Alexandra has been commissioned to choreograph a variety of musical theater productions for the Concordia Conservatory, and her choreography has been featured in the award-winning feature film Thirsty. Alexandra was the recipient of the 2012 Best Choreography Award from Hunter College for her piece Shiv’ah, the Director’s Choice Award from the Gowanus Arts Center for her piece Black Cuts, Body, and Honorary Mention Award from Experimental Forum Film Festival for a SymMetrics.
