CUMBE: CENTER FOR AFRICAN AND DIASPORA DANCE

Why do we dance? Everyone around the world dances. But what makes Black dance special? It’s about the survival of tradition, celebration, release, connection, worship and love. Black social dance is the heartbeat of American culture and permeates throughout the world, influencing societies in magical ways.

This month, we are celebrating and exploring the influence of Black American Social Dance with fun classes like Line Dancing and Chicago Style Stepping along with workshops like Jazz! and AfroClub Dance. Cumbe is dedicated to sharing the diversity of the African diaspora through dance and music. This month is about exploring the African Diaspora that lives right here in America.

We also invite you to join us for a series of talks and lectures. This month, we are talking about Jazz dance with performing artist LaTasha Barnes and taking a historical journey into the world of Black Social Dance in an immersive lecture with Dani Criss The Artist. These educational experiences are donation based and great for any age.
