Artichoke Dance Company hosts free workshops leading up to Global Water Dances at Coney Island, a celebration using the arts to raise awareness about and advocate for access to clean safe water. The dance workshop runs 2:00-3:15 and teaches “The Story of Water” a participatory dance that is performed worldwide on Global Water Dances Day. The trashion, fashion from trash, workshop runs 3:30-5:00pm for participants to create their own costumes. All materials will be provided. Participants who learn the dance and create a costume can then perform The Story of Water with Artichoke Dance Company on Global Water Dances Day, June 14.

All workshops, held on both Saturdays May 31 and June 7, are free and at Coney Island Open Streets, located on West 22nd Street between Neptune Avenue and Coney Island Creek. Sign up here.

The Brooklyn-based Artichoke Dance Company is one of the nation's leading eco-arts organizations, delighting audiences of all ages with dynamic site  performance works. Like many of Artichoke Dance Company’s productions, Global Water Dances at Coney Island features costumes created from upcycled plastic materials, demonstrating zero-waste principles while commenting on the proliferation of plastics in contemporary life. In 2025, Global Water Dances celebrates its 14th year of dancing for safe water everywhere. Leveraging the power of non-verbal communication through movement.
