The Playground NYC allows dancers to experience various choreographic styles and ideas, engage with a new community of dancers, and gather resourceful information and inspiration from the array of choreographers involved. In turn, established choreographers are paid for their creative investigations, are given free space to explore new movement with professional dancers, and are provided with the opportunity to establish relationships with new dancers and fellow choreographers.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

My contemporary technique class is designed to prepare dancers for a wide range of contemporary choreographic styles and processes as encountered in professional situations. It consists of floor work, body conditioning, movement etudes, and structured improvisation.  Incorporating elements adapted from yoga, Pilates, and the Feldenkrais Method, it establishes a safe but challenging environment for exploration. Dancers investigate movement initiation from different points in the body and learn strategies for efficient level changes.  As the class cycles through set material, task-based and story-based improvisation, dancers build coordination, strength, clarity of movement/intention, movement quality, and creativity.

BIO:

Gabrielle Lamb, winner of a Princess Grace Award for Choreography, is based in New York City, where she directs her own company, Pigeonwing Dance.  She has been described by DANCE Magazine “a dancer of stunning clarity who illuminates the smallest details—qualities she brings to the dances she makes, too".

Her work has also been presented by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, BalletX (Philadelphia), Whim W’him (Seattle), Ballet Collective (NYC), Dark Circles (Dallas),  Sacramento Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Austin, Ballet Memphis, Jacob’s Pillow, Hubbard Street 2, Dance Theatre of Harlem, SUNY Purchase Conservatory, SALT Contemporary Dance (Utah), Dance on Camera at Lincoln Center,  and the American Dance Festival.

Ms Lamb has won choreographic competitions at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Milwaukee Ballet, and Western Michigan University, as well as the Banff Centre's Clifford E. Lee Award and a New York City Center Choreography Fellowship.  Most recently she was selected Grand Prize Winner of the S&R Foundation's Washington Award. She is also a participant in the inaugural ABT Choreographic Incubator.

A native of Savannah, GA, she trained at the Boston Ballet School and was a longtime soloist at Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal. In 2009 she was invited by Christopher Wheeldon to join his company Morphoses in New York City. Her repertoire as a performer has also included principal roles in works by George Balanchine, Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Luca Veggetti, Shen Wei, and Pontus Lidberg.
