Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center, 280 Broadway, NYC

Entrance 53A Chambers Street

The Playground NYC allows dancers to experience various choreographic styles and ideas, engage with a new community of dancers, and gather resourceful information and inspiration from the array of choreographers involved. In turn, established choreographers are paid for their creative investigations, are given free space to explore new movements with professional dancers, and are provided with the opportunity to establish relationships with new dancers and fellow choreographers.

Class Description:

The class will focus on personal physical research and aims to improve the participants' "movement toolbox." Together, we will work on building a strong technical base that, over time, will help prevent injuries, increase control of a range of motion and use of space, and all this while maintaining personal authenticity and enhancing the uniqueness of each one.

The class will begin with a warm-up lesson and technique based on my motor language that includes improvisation, motor spontaneity, and theatricality as tools to enhance the physical and mental experience. During the class, we will learn movement materials from my work and experience personal research as a tool to strengthen the principles explored in the class.

Bio:

Tomo Sone is an independent choreographer and performer. She studied classical ballet in Japan, then trained in contemporary dance and started her career as a choreographer in Israel in 2008. In 2010, she established Japan-Israel International Dance Project with Israeli choreographers and dancers.

Nowadays, she is expanding her activity internationally and performing, creating as an invited artist to residency programs and leading movement workshops for dancers and non-dancers. She has presented her works at Suzanne Dellal Center (Israel), Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporánea de la Ciudad de México (Mexico), Solo contest at Gdansk Dance Festival (Poland), Kyoto Art Center (Japan), and many more.

Her work is often based on human relationships, presence, and inner struggles. Her interest is focused mainly on the relationship between humans and their circumstances in life and how people react to the events surrounding them.

Tomo was awarded "Emerging Artist for Art and Culture" by Kyoto City in 2010.
