Loco-Motion's young choreographers and dancers ages 7 - 18 conceptualized, created and choreographed 12 short pieces utilizing a unique creative process developed by Artistic Director Lisa Pilato that fosters collective expression and artistic autonomy. This unique performance will give audiences a glimpse into the hearts and minds of young choreographers who have chosen topics that reflect their experiences growing up in today's complex world and include: A dance reflection on truth, power and the choices we make in a divided political landscape, a dance about the thought process of shaping what comes next, a humorous piece centered on a child teaching a local politician how to lead, a fantasy number of a perfect universe, a navigation of teenage friendship dynamics and an alumni duet.
Young artists who are relatively new to the choreographic process will have the opportunity to showcase their work alongside Loco-Motion’s older and more experienced choreographers and a few alumni. The collective choreographic process has coalesced and transformed this dedicated company of young dance activists into a formidable ensemble. It will prove to be an entertaining and thought provoking experience for audiences of all ages.
“We provide a forum for young voices to be heard,” says Pilato. “We encourage students to create material that reflects their responsibility as members of a global community, to search for fresh answers to old questions while exploring the idea that art can effect positive change. We encourage children to take risks, and we support them in their creative vision.”
