Black Lakes is that space just behind the eyelids – a state of being that glides, expansive…

Making a turn away from more theatrical, tightly orchestrated choreography, Black Lakes investigates new ways of creating and seeing a dance. The origin of the piecelies in the desire to craft a generous and alive performance space - to strip away conventional expectations on the part of both performer and audience. Workum developed Black Lakes alongside an ongoing improvisational practice with Bessie-nominated Eleanor Smith and Weena Pauly. The three performers move in and out of solos, unison, and duets. Contained within this set structure, the content of every performance will be created anew each night. The world premiere of Black Lakes includes a minimalist soundscape by the Bessie award-winning James Lo.

Performances of Black Lakes will take place on August 8 and 9 at 8pm at Mount Tremper Arts, which is located at 647 South Plank Rd in Mount Tremper, NY. $20 tickets are available online at mounttremperarts.org, by phone at 866-811-4111, or in person at the Mount Tremper Arts box office, which opens one hour before events.

Katie Workum’s dances attempt to access the parts of us that have no words – the parts humming underneath our thinking brains. She has created nine evening-length works, including three commissioned by The Chocolate Factory, Dance Theater Workshop, and Dance New Amsterdam. As a dancer she has worked with: Ivy Baldwin, David Neumann, Stacy Dawson, Ken Ninzel, Elizabeth Streb, Sarah East Johnson, Jenny Seastone Stern, Julia Jonas and Young Jean Lee. She holds a Master’s in Dance education from NYU. Visit katieworkum.org for more information.
