Reading, writing and all that jazz. Dance — in all its forms and styles — is a basic joyous right of children, according to the UFT/New York City Dance Educators. This year’s festival, features thirteen student dance groups selected from public schools all over New York City. Dance works range from the traditionally presentational to those grown from a creative process generated by student dance makers. All styles and genres are represented here with students ranging in age from 7-18 years old. This year, select students from NYC public schools will receive an "Excellence in Dance" award for their commitment to academics, character, and dance as an art form.
The various groups are made up of boys and girls who love dance so much that they stay after school, forgo recess, or show up to dance early in the morning before the regular school day begins. Their teachers are full-time dance educators who are dancers, choreographers and tireless advocates for arts learning within their schools and communities.
The experience of performing is powerful. It provides students with a sense of ownership of their artistry fostering self-awareness, confidence and personal strength. This special celebration, organized by Sandra Stratton-Gonzalez (PS 372), allows dance students a wonderful opportunity for learning and self-expression and a way to share their work with family, friends and other dedicated dancers from across the city.
