Peter Kyle Dance premieres Vigilance, an intimate visually compelling choreographic installation. Four dancers, one percussionist and kinetic sculptures converge in a dynamic theatrical performance exploring immediacy, frailty, strength and the phenomenon of attention.
In typical Kyle fashion, the evening offers audiences a rich, multi-faceted opportunity to experience dance in new ways. Performances take place Nov. 6-8 at 8pm, with a family matinee at 4pm on Nov. 8th. All shows are in the new Muriel Schulman Theater at Triskelion Arts, located at 106 Calyer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11222. Tickets are $16 (general admission) and may be purchased at the door or online at brownpapertickets.com. The family matinee offers each full paying adult one free ticket for a child, and $5 tickets for each additional child.
Known for bringing together dynamic creative teams, Kyle’s project is no exception. In Vigilance the veteran performer, hailed by The New York Post as “splendid” joins dancers Marielis Garcia, Harrison Holmes and Leigh Lotocki. Rounding out the creative team are regular PKD collaborators: composer/percussionist, Brad Wentworth, who will play live, including manipulations of Franz Liszt’s rhapsodic piano suite “Consolations”; couture designer Garo Sparo, and lighting designer Andrew Dickerson. This is Kyle’s second project with visual artist Caleb Nussear. For the past year they have been exploring questions surrounding attention—how and what each of us pays attention to in a given moment. Their research yielded an improvised practice they call reflexive drawing, a surprising, dynamic feedback loop revealing refined physical vocabularies. Kyle and Nussear’s shared interests in spatial dynamics and aesthetics, are informed, in part by the work of early Psychologist, William James, who asserted: “My experience is what I agree to attend to. Only those items which I notice shape my mind”.
Kyle’s critically acclaimed work has been hailed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as "vibrantly rich", by Timeout NY as "exquisitely choreographed", by the New York Times as “an enjoyable evening”. In 2013 The Dance Enthusiast wrote, “His work reminds us how magnificent this set up of flesh and bones is with its countless possibilities and unexpected nobilities.” Kyle's work reveals a unique appreciation for the theatricality of human movement. His dances appeal to seasoned dance fans and new audiences alike.
