About Joffrey's Choreographers of Color Awards

The Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet is excited to announce a call for diverse artists to submit applications for The Joffrey’s annual Choreographers of Color Awards. The Joffrey Academy of Dance is seeking original work developed by applicants with the hope that a diverse perspective will ignite creativity in new works.

Three winners will receive a ,500 stipend and will have the opportunity to work directly with Academy Artistic Directors, Alexei Kremnev and Anna Reznik. The choreographers’ world premiere works will be showcased on The Joffrey Academy Trainees at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park and other venues throughout the year.

Applicants must submit the following by mail or send to the email address: choreographersofcolor@joffrey.org.

  • DVD with a five-minute or less excerpt of your choreography with a brief written description
  • A letter of intent describing your interest in the competition and the kind of work you will create in 500-1,000 words
  • Headshot and curriculum vitae with three references

  • There is no submission fee. Application materials will not be returned.


Submission deadline:
All materials must be postmarked by September 2, 2013.

Eligibility:
The Joffrey Ballet is looking for talented choreographers with 2+ years of experience setting work on classically trained dancers. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older and must be United States citizens.

Details:
The choreographers’ finished pieces must be a minimum of 10 minutes and maximum of 12 minutes long. Selected choreographers will be given a minimum of 30 rehearsal hours to set their pieces on the Joffrey Academy Trainees. Each winning artist will also receive a ,500 stipend, and an opportunity to work directly with Academy Artistic Directors, Alexei Kremnev and Anna Reznik. Choreographers whose permanent residence is more than 100 miles from Joffrey Tower will be provided with accommodations for the duration of their residency (two weeks in January/February 2014; schedule TBD). The completed new works will be performed at various venues throughout the 2013-2014 academic year, including Joffrey Tower and the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park.


Performance

The Choreographers of Color Awards showcase will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at The Harris Theater for Music + Dance in Millennium Park. Tickets for the performance will go on sale in January 2014.
