Intensive Description
Stephen Petronio Company’s week-long intensive is focused on building a rigorous and intelligent movement practice. Classes will feature an hour-long technique class (2-3pm), an hour of direct engagement with Petronio and his creative process (3-4pm), and two hours of immersion in Company repertory (4-6pm). Beginning with a warm-up that guides participants to make a muscular and skeletal connection to their unique physicality, emphasis is placed on the articulation of the spine, the opening of the joints, and the direction and flow of energy throughout the body and into space. Class will then shift to a focus on building movement through in-depth investigation of multiple states of consciousness in the body, physical play, and the tools that facilitate accidental discovery in defiance of logic.
The second half of class, is designed to be cumulative. Students will learn a larger section from a piece of Company repertory, addressing its unique focus on dynamic sequencing, poly-rhythmic initiations, and a sense of fearlessness within a complex architectural form.
