WHITE WAVE Announces Its 8th Annual WAVE RISING SERIES
WHITE WAVE announces its 8th annual WAVE RISING SERIES featuring approximately 21 dance companies showcased in the acclaimed three week festival. Selected by a panel of esteemed presenters and dance artists in New York, a talented group of established and rising national and international dancemakers w ill appear in this year’s SERIES. The Festival (October 23 - November 10, 2013) will take place at WHITE WAVE John Ryan Theater, located at 25 Jay Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn. WHITE WAVE’s Artistic Director Young Soon Kim founded the WAVE RISING SERI ES in 2006 as a platform for companies who may not have the resources to stage full productions of their w orks. WAVE RISING is one of the only programs of its kind in New York City, offering rising choreographers the opportunity to present their work on a large scale, often for the first time, alongside a handful of invited companies from among the most visionary names in contemporary dance. The WAVE RISING SERIES, which started by presenting local companies, now features innovative dancemakers from around the w orld. Participating ensembles are chosen through an open application process by a selection panel including prominent figures from the dance world. The superb national and international companies are given 30 minutes each on a shared bill, performing three times over the course of the three w eek festival. Roslyn Sulcas of the New York Times wrote, “[The WAVE RISING SERIES’] attempt to showcase a broad variety of work is admirable. Tickets are cheap and dancing plentiful; it’s a good mix.“
WEDNESDAY PREVIEW NIGHTS: “Preview Night” takes place each Wednesday of the Festival (Oct 23, Oct 30, Nov 6). The evening starts at 7:30pm with 10-minute-snippets of the featured companies for that week. By 9:00pm the party starts with great drinks & eats provided by local businesses, music, and a floor w ide open for mingling and dancing!
