A SUMMER OF SBB
COMPANY SBB PRESENTS ‘PATIENT(CE)’ AT SUMMERSTAGE ONAUGUST 10 WITH ARTISTIC DIRECTOR STEFANIE BATTEN BLAND SPEAKING ON PANEL CELEBRATING WOMEN IN DANCE ON JULY 26
On Thursday, August 10, 2017 Jerome Robbins Awardee Stefanie Batten Bland will bring her internationally-acclaimed Company SBB to present “Patient(ce) - a physical requiem” as part of City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage at the East River Park Amphitheater.
Noted by The Dance Enthusiast’s Christine Jowers as an artist who “doesn’t simply choreograph bodies, she orchestrates environments,” Batten Bland created “Patient(ce)” in 2015 as an ode to controversial contemporary jazz composer and filmmaker, Ed Bland -- who is also Stefanie’s father. This deeply personal interdisciplinary work is inspired by the structure of jazz with its formal emphasis on the eternal present. Through a collaboration with futuristic jazz ensemble Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber and visual installation by Alaric Hahn and Batten Bland herself, “Patient(ce)” examines the grace one finds in life when harmony is found through space and time.
In addition to presenting “Patient(ce),” Artistic Director Stefanie Batten Bland will join Christine Cox of Ballet X and Yin Yue of YY Dance Company on a free panel on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 6pm. The panel, moderated by dance critic Apollinaire Scherr, will discuss women at the forefront of dance as choreographers, artistic directors and executive directors.
The 50-minute work will be performed by Company SBB dancers Nicolette Alberti, Patrick McGrath, Yeman Brown, Will Brown, Jennifer Payan and Mistral Hay. Led by Greg Tate, members of the Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber- Mikel Banks, Julie Brown, Chris Eddleton and V. Jeffrey Smith- will also perform live. Costumes are by Deborah Ferguson.
The August 10th performance at SummerStage, which is free to the public, will take place in East River Park at the East River Park Amphitheater at8pm. A contemporary movement workshop, led by Calvin Wiley and open to all ages and levels, will precede the performance at 7pm.
