CHATHAM, NY: Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre at PS21
Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre
Performance Spaces for the 21st Century welcomes Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre, a modern dance company known for its striking blend of theatricality and musicality. Performances will take place Friday and Saturday, August 17 and 18, in PS21’s new state-of-the-art pavilion theater located at 2980 Route 66 in the town of Chatham.
The evening will include performances of two popular pieces, “Middlegame” and “Romanesco Suite.”
“Middlegame” takes its inspiration from the game of chess and 19th century café life, employing tactics of game strategy and seduction. Exploring ideas of élitism, power, and submission within interpersonal relationships, the dance considers the manipulation of “being played, while playing along.”
“Romanesco Suite” is inspired by the theory of fractals and geometric shapes that occur in nature. The dance is accompanied by a recording of the 17-year brood of cicadas that emerged in the summer of 2013 and is a playfully abstract reflection on the natural order of relationships.
Czech born Dušan Týnek has strong ties to the area. He attended Bard College in Dutchess County, where he studied dance performance and composition, in addition to studies in the natural sciences. “I love going upstate and consider it my second home. It will be a treat to venture a little further north and expose my work to a new audience,” he said.
Since its debut performance in 2014, Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre has garnered much critical acclaim. The innovation, sophistication, craftsmanship and artistry of its dancers, musicians, and designers has helped them build an impressive reputation.
Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre tours and performs domestically and internationally, and has held its home performance seasons at leading NYC dance venues including Dance Theater Workshop, which “The New York Times” named one of NYC’s top 5 dance performances of the year. Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre consistently receives exceptional reviews from “The New York Times,” “The New Yorker,” “Financial Times London,” “Village Voice” and many other publications.
