CHI Artists Summer Workshops
KYL/D's CHI Artists Summer Workshops
Professional workshops led by the artists of KYL/D designed to advance the professional or aspiring dancer. Classes are influenced by Kun-Yang Lin's CHI Awareness Technique, through the unique voice of each Teaching Artist. Company repertory and the artists' choreography will be included in class work.
Monday-Friday 1:30-3:30pm (no class July 4th)
CHI Awareness Technique
Dancers will experience contemporary dance through the lens of world culture, in a way that critics describe as "post-postmodernist" (NY Times Radio) and "visionary" (Inquirer). Training focuses on using the breath and energy to define relationships between explosive bursts of rapid, expansive phrase work and absolute stillness. The movement vocabulary is dynamic, contemporary and global. Practice draws on Eastern philosophies to explore dance as the ultimate integration of "body, mind and spirit." Class begins quietly and gradually builds in complexity, culminating in a dynamic phrase.
Hailed for its superbly trained dancers and inventive choreography, the internationally-recognized KYL/D expands the perimeter of contemporary dance, draws upon Eastern philosophies, and probes at the limits of personal and collective identity. Artistic Director Lin's Zen-inspired practice of dance, CHI Awareness Technique, manifests in lush works of poetic sensibility that "create and inhabit worlds of their own" ~The New York Times.
CHI Movement Arts Center, the home of Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, is a place of learning, exploration, and growth for diverse people and perspectives. CHI, Mandarin for "breath" or "vital life source", is at the core of our artistry and our educational activities. KYL/D is committed to contributing to the rich cultural life of broader Philadelphia. Experience this essence and discover the power of art to transform ourselves, our schools, our workplaces, and our world!
