Chen Dance Center presents newsteps, its semi-annual emerging choreographers series, May 7-9 at 7:30 PM. Since its founding in 1994, the Series has supported and presented over 250 artists developing innovative and risk-taking works through rehearsal space grants and public performances. The five choreographers were selected for the May 7-9 concerts: Jonathan Breton, Hannah Cohen, Bree Nasby, Janice Rosario, and Ashley Carter & Vanessa Martinez de Banos.
The young choreographers, selected through an open audition by a panel of dance leaders including H.T. Chen, Sarah Skaggs and Walter Rutledge, each receive a rehearsal space grant, an honorarium, and are produced in three public performances at the Center.
Jonathan Breton has created a solo inspired by nature and its complexities;
Ashley Carter and Vanessa Martinez de Banos' work deals with society's mistrust of variance form the norm;
Hannah Cohen has created a duet "Genesis," which, through movement, explores word as material;
Bree Nasby will present a solo investigating how tension and suspension build and dissolve;
Janice Rosario's "Unlea(she)d" explores how women find anguish and strength in their identity.
About the Chen Dance Center
With its renovated artist spaces and cultural information hub, Chen Dance Center (CDC) provides a refreshed and intimate black box performance space. CDC was created in 1988 with the mission of promoting understanding through the arts, providing professional opportunities for artists, increasing participating in the arts and developing future audiences. As a co-presenter of independent artists and presenter of the dance series newsteps, CDC supports the development of the selected dance artists by providing free rehearsal space and public performances in the theater. CDC proudly celebrates the distinction of being the first professional performance space in New York City's Chinatown, and also serves as a home base for local and visiting artists to develop and showcase their work. CDC hosts H.T. Chen & Dancers' annual educational series for children, provides affordable rehearsal space for modern dance companies, and acts as a venue for community events.
CHEN DANCE CENTER is comprised of three components: a performing arts school, a black box theater for modern dance, and home of the resident company, H.T. Chen & Dancers. CDC is supported by The Ford Foundation, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, New York State Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and Ettie Chin Hong Fund.
