Como ser artista y no morir en el intento (How to be an artist and not die trying)
Company:
BAAD! BRONX ACADEMY OF ART AND DANCE
It's an interdisciplinary work in process that integrates flamenco, contemporary dance and arab dance. It works with a soundscape created with extracts from interviews done with local Puerto Rican artist on the topic of art making in, from and within Puerto Rico. An ex-Spanish colony turned US territory, Puerto Rico is currently undergoing the worst economic crisis in its history. It has defaulted on its debt, for the first time in its history Puerto Rico's population has decreased due to massive emigration, the zika virus has been doing the rounds and as if that wasn't enough, 23 of the Orlando massacre victims were Puerto Ricans. In the middle of all this, why insist on making art? Does it help? Why does it even matter, if at all, that artists not die? Art making. Crisis. Here we stand, move and dance.
