DANCENOW Announces 2012–13 Season10-Year Anniversary at Joe’s Pub
New York, NY July 9, 2012 – DANCENOW celebrates its tenth year of programming dance at Joe’s Pub. The season kicks off with the 2012 DANCENOW Joe’s Pub Festival featuring an exciting lineup of 40 choreographers/dance companies over five evenings, Wednesday, September 5 to Saturday, September 8, 2012, and an encore performance on Saturday, September 15, 2012. The season also includes Dancemopolitan, DANCENOW’s commissioned artist series, which will feature works by five choreographers in February, April, and June 2013.
Continuing its signature short-takes format, the DANCENOW Joe’s Pub Festival showcases a wide-range of work by emerging and established artists, offering audiences a look at the rich diversity of dance in New York City. The festival serves as a testing ground for new ideas, providing artists with a unique opportunity to experiment with their craft and create work for New York City’s “best tiny stage.” The Director of Joe’s Pub Shanta Thake stated, “Joe’s Pub is proud to have been partnered with DANCENOW since 2003. Part of our mission at Joe’s is to present all genres of entertainment and it has been an incredible addition to our programming. No one thought we could do modern dance on a stage our size, and DANCENOW has proved everyone wrong!”
This year’s festival continues to offer the DANCENOW Challenge, which asks festival artists to take the DANCENOW “less is more” mantra truly to heart and create a choreographic work of five minutes or less that makes a concise artistic statement. Each evening, the audience will vote for a Challenge winner who will receive a free weeklong creative residency at DANCENOW Silo on Kirkland Farm in Pennsylvania. The top ten choreographers whose work best meets this challenge will be invited to participate in the encore performance on September 15. One winner from the entire festival run, selected by DANCENOW producers and advisors, will receive a ,000 creative development stipend, a free weeklong creative residency at Silo on Kirkland Farm, and a 20-hour space grant from the Gibney Dance Center.
For the 2013 Dancemopolitan series, DANCENOW will present a revival of its Modern Dance Musicals series, February 14–16, 2013. The program will feature excerpts from three critically acclaimed works—Doug Elkins’ Fräulein Maria, David Parker’s Showdown, and Nicholas Leichter’s The Whiz. The Dancemopolitan series will also present full-length premieres by two previous Challenge winnersaTakehiro Ueyama/TAKE dance on April 19–20, 2013, and Adam Barruch, June 5–6, 2013.
