Dakshina Palli is a Cultural and Educational organization in NYC, which teaches and presents the Sout Indian Dance form called Bharata Natyam. The organization has been teaching students for over a decade in Manhattan. Dakshina Palli teaches in the Tanjore Court style, in the lineage of the late great South Indian Dancer T. Balasaraswati.Classes are taught by Mr. Jaan R. Freeman who is a disciple of Smt. Nandini Ramani & Smt. Priyamvada Sankar, both senior disciples of T. Balasaraswati. Mr. Freeman runs Dakshina Palli has been performing and teaching for 22 years. Having studied Bharata Natyam in NYC, India and Montreal, Canada.Freeman has been touring the United States with his solo program entlted "Bharata Natyam ~for New Audiences" which is in its 10th season.
Mr. Freeman will begin active teaching in midtown once again for serious students who wish to learn beyond the basics. Classes will be conducted for students who wish to take private or semi private classes. Classes are offer to both men & women who are serious and focused. NO DROP IN CLASSES ALLOWED!
Students must purchase a class card of 4 to 10 classes. Available times can be worked out with Mr. Freeman, but most classes are conducted on Friday, Sat or Sun. The time can be worked out with teacher.
Students will learn the basic adavus (basic steps), Asamyuta & Samyuta hastas (single and double hand gestures) Bedhas of the body, Pada Vinyasa ( foot positions). These classes are for the fundamental level student. All students new to Dakshina MUST relearn the basic steps in the style taught at Dakshina.
