Dance Course with Henning Rubsam at Juilliard

A four-week course - Thursdays - 5:30-7PM
Juilliard Dances with Live Music
Henning RübsamThe annual springtime Juilliard Dances Repertory series (April 3-7, 2013) features works by choreographers Murray Louis, Paul Taylor, and William Forsythe, with live music performed by Juilliard Jazz and Classical musicians. This course prepares students for this exciting production by exploring the following questions: Why did Louis choose to use the music of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond? How does a small ensemble of musicians prepare to play for dancers? How much room for interpretation and improvisation is given to jazz musicians when collaborating with dancers? Are improvisational tools used by the dancers? A conversation with two former Murray Louis dancers — Alberto del Saz (who stages the work) and the instructor, Henning Rübsam — furthers our discussion. The other works on the program, by William Forsythe and Paul Taylor, are introduced and demystified. A ticket to the opening night of the Juilliard Dances Repertory performance is included.
