Miami--- The New World Dance Ensemble comprised of New World School of the Arts (NWSA) college dance alumni and college merit scholarship students will present three performances of the work of British choreographer Darshan Singh Bhuller. The first two performances will be offered in Miami and, accompanied by Mary Lisa Burns, Dean of dance at NWSA, the 13-member New World Dance Ensemble cast will then travel to New York City to present the third and last show.

"Working with the New World School of the Arts over the past six years has given me the opportunity to test ideas that I develop further with my own professional company in London,” said Bhuller. “This year, to my surprise, I've been given the honor to present a full evening of my work, including some of the pieces which were first choreographed on the school. Present students and Alums will form the New World Dance Ensemble performing in this project. This is a very exciting project for me, but more importantly it is a chance for these amazing dancers to be seen here in Miami and New York City."
The dynamic program will include the powerful dance/drama, The Virgin Queen. A choreography about romantic betrayal and palace intrigue in the court of Queen Elizabeth, the work is set to an eclectic score of period music mixed with Beatles and the Sex Pistols. The piece takes place in a state-of-the-art graphic environment designed by Kit Monkman and Tom Wexler, which transports both dancers and audience alike to the Queen’s palace in a driving London rain storm; to the palace lawn and gardens; and even into the royal boudoir.
Also to be presented is the beautiful Mapping #4, an abstract evocation about cultural dislocation and human connection, set to the music of Shankar/Warren Cuccurullo and Kaki King, and featuring real-time camera projections, which add perspective in time and space.
Laal, originally performed by Phoenix Dance Theater, a powerful and virtuosic solo; Stand and Stare, a duet originally choreographed on the Rambert Dance Company based on the paintings of English painter L.S. Lowry; and the passionate duet, Interlock, created originally for London Contemporary Dance Theater and performed with live sitar accompaniment by renowned sitarist Amitava Chatterjee will round off the presentations.
Darshan Singh Bhuller: As dancer, rehearsal director, choreographer and teacher, his career with London Contemporary Dance Theatre spanned from 1979 to 1994. He became Assistant Director to Richard Alston Dance Company from 1994 to 1996. He was also a member of the Siobhan Davies Dance Company. Darshan has created and directed works for international companies including CeDeCe and for Companhia de Bailado Contemporaneo (Portugal), Scottish Dance Theatre, CandoCo Dance Company, Nordic Dance Theatre (Norway), London Contemporary Dance Theatre. Collaborations with other artists, choreographers, musicians and filmmakers include Graham Dean, Robert Cohan, Barry Guy, Barrington Pheloung, John Martyn and Jocelyn Pook. Darshan worked alongside Director Micha Bergese to choreograph and direct the Opening Ceremony for the Millennium Dome and as Assistant Director and Choreographer Shaolin Wheel of Life, an international production with the Shaolin Monks of China. Darshan was appointed Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre in 2002. Over the five years in the post, he revitalized the reputation of the company on the national and international stage earning Company Prize for Outstanding Repertoire (Modern) in the 2006 Critic’s Circle National Dance Awards. After a successful US tour in 2006, he stepped down as Artistic Director, returning to freelance teaching and directing. He also has directed and choreographed numerous dance theatre productions & short films through his own company Singh Productions since 1990 to the present day. He was awarded an Arts Council of England project grant to tour his full-length work, Caravaggio: Exile and Death, in 2011. His recent films, Jayne Lee's Dance Down River and a documentary on works by British choreographer, Richard Alston were launched in 2009 and 2010.
New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts. It is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida. Through these educational partnerships NWSA’ audition-based dance program, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art, Dance, Music and Theater, offers the high school diploma and four-year BFA college degree. Areas of concentration in Dance include Ballet, Choreography, Modern Dance, and World Dance.
