ELISA MONTE DANCE OPENS 33RD NEW YORK
PERFORMANCE SEASON
Season to Include Three World Premieres, Educational Residency and Workshops, Dance Festivals, and Joint Season with Jennifer Muller and Jacqulyn Buglisi
NEW YORK, April 24, 2014 — Elisa Monte Dance, an emotionally charged and highly acclaimed dance company that champions individuality, kicks off its 33rd anniversary year with a well-rounded and exciting schedule of events. In keeping true to its educational initiatives, the company will take residency at the City College of New York for four days in early May with a series of open rehearsals to launch the momentum of the 33rd Season. The company’s 2014 New York season at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater May 15-17, will feature three world premieres. The company will appear in Dance St. Louis festival May 21-22 and at the Bryant Park Dance Series co-produced by Inception to Exhibition on opening night, June 13. The company will round out their spring celebration with a split bill at New York Live Arts along side modern dance greats Jennifer Muller/The Works and Buglisi Dance Theatre.
“This multi-faceted 33rd season shows the company’s reach and range,” says Associate Artistic Director, Tiffany Rea-Fisher. “There is such a diverse and eclectic collection of work being cultivated, which is mirrored in the varying venues and target audiences throughout the city with each event.”
Starting May 5-8, the dancers will head to City College of New York, for an immersive and open rehearsal process to prepare for their New York season. The residency will aid the company for their Fall collaboration with the CUNY Dance Initiative, by setting the tone and momentum of the work to be performed in the coming months.
New York audiences will have the opportunity to see three world premieres during Elisa Monte Dance’s season at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Elisa Monte, who has choreographed more than 50 works, will add another piece to the repertory during this 33rd season—with an expansive range of movement and a diverse movement vocabulary, Monte has gained a strong foothold as an important contributor to contemporary and modern dance. Tiffany Rea- Fisher, with her quick and direct sensibility, will present Persona Umbra, mixing gestural and pedestrian movements with athleticism and virtuosity. Additionally, principal dancer Joe Celej will premiere a male trio that celebrates and explores a masculine sensitivity and the quiet strength that is often overlooked.
Elisa Monte Dance will be featured in the opening night performance at the Bryant Park Dance Series co-produced by Inception to Exhibition on June 13. The Bryant Park and Inception to Exhibition will bring together a combination of talented emerging and established dance artists for three Fridays in June.
The company will round out their 33rd season next to Jennifer Muller/The Works and the Buglisi Dance Theatre in a powerful joint season at New York Live Arts from June 18-21. Monte’s Lonely Planet, the fourth and final part in a succession of works started in 2011, will be on the program in an investigation of issues related to existence, permanence and the ephemeral nature of living. This piece explores the rapid disappearance of language and culture in conjunction of the disintegration of community with a resolution of hope and accountability.
Lastly, the company will present two 5-day workshops at STEPS on Broadway in July and August to not only introduce students to Elisa Monte’s technique and repertory but also present compositional skills, providing dancers with the tools to create movement and to cultivate an artistic voice. To compliment this educational initiative, the company will also participate in STEPS’s Creative Tools workshops, with other notable dance makers, to create new works and provide them with a performance opportunity at the workshops conclusion.
