Laura Peterson Choreography is bringing the first NYC work-in-progress showing of their new piece Paper Room performed at the Making Moves Dance Festival at the Jamaica Arts Center.
Inspired by the origami paper-folding techniques, Paper Room will be a dance and visual art installation in which a large collapsible paper structure obscures parts of the complex choreography placed in the performance space. Over the course of the show, the paper installation gradually condenses into a smaller, angular sculpture revealing the reality of the dancers on the other side. Like the installation itself, the bodies are folding and rearranging in complicated patterns, in constant flux, inviting the viewers to consider how much of what we see is “true” or “real” – and how we make that determination.
For Making Moves Festival, the artist decided to choose two elements with which to experiment: working on movement material and the idea of obstructing the audience's view for a portion of the performance as a way to learn about the experience of not knowing the "whole story".
