Outdoor dance performances are rare occurrences on the Upper East Side however on Friday, June 27th a small group of dancers will perform at twilight on a street closed to vehicles for the past thirty years. The raked terrain of East 91st Street which is flanked by Ruppert and Yorkville Towers will transform the work, ,recently presented at the Merce Cunningham Studio, into a surprising dance happening. Part dream and part memory-inflected narrative, An Absurd Vice is a meditation on the altered state of consciousness known as romantic love. The movement, which is mined from fragments of daily human observation and experience, strips away the vestiges of romance to expose the melding and dissolving of partnerships. Pure dance and pedestrian movement are spun together to create a fabric of sensual movement design as love evades reason. The music unfurls with a wide stylistic range from Loretta Lynn to Georges Fredric Handel as sound filters through and weaves together the sliding, overlapping chapters of this cautionary tale. Throughout the work of contemporary dance theater, Ms. Gallant celebrates and highlights the unique skills of her dancer/collaborators, Michelle Cohen, Francesca Todesco, Chriselle Tidrick, Rob Fernandez, Noah Damer, Billy Blanken, Melissa Rodnan and Jason Bowell. An Absurd Vice is made possible in part with public funds from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Silent Auction and Party to benefit CG/DANCE immediately following the performance. www.catherinegallantdance.com
