Gibney Company returns to The Joyce Theater for its fifth season with a program that brings four distinct choreographic voices into dialogue. The engagement is anchored by the world premiere of On Contemplation of Wailing by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founder of Urban Bush Women, a work shaped in collaboration with the ensemble that examines grief, resilience, and collective memory through the body.
The program also features Lucinda Childs’ Canto Ostinato, presented as part of the company’s newly announced five-year partnership with the pioneering minimalist choreographer, alongside Medhi Walerski’s intimate duet Silent Tides and Mthuthuzeli November’s Vukani, a rhythmically grounded work drawing from Xhosa dance traditions.
Together, the works explore ritual, repetition, vulnerability, and awakening, reflecting Gibney Company’s ongoing commitment to rigorous contemporary dance rooted in humanistic inquiry.
