DANCES FOR A VARIABLE POPULATION (DVP) directed by Naomi Goldberg Haas, will join older adults, neighborhood youth, and the DVP company for "Hudson River Dances" a delightful work of dance dialogues which unites three generations of performers, ages 10 to 90, erasing the border between dancer and non-dancer. For her company's debut in Hudson River Park, Goldberg Haas will present her multigenerational dance company in their fifth large scale site-related work, bringing dance to the community, and the community onto the stage. Performances are free to the public, and will take place June 14 & 15 at 5 PM & 6:30 PM at Hudson River Park's 14th Street Park in the Meatpacking District, at 10th Avenue (kittycorner to Chelsea Market).
For "Hudson River Dances" DVP will collaborate with composer Jascha Narveson, who has created a shimmering, glistening tapestry of tinkling melodic sound that moves through the park via an array of portable speakers controlled by the dancers. ( www.jaschanarveson.com) Choreographer Goldberg Haas will make full use of the 150 x 180 foot park, a natural meeting place for conversation and exchange within the hub bub of the city. Partners include the Hudson Guild Fulton Center, the Beacon Afterschool Program at Hudson Guild, and Hudson River Park.
Founded in 2005, NYC-based Dances For A Variable Population (DVP) has created dance performances in some of the city's most iconic public spaces, city parks and transportation hubs, including in Times Square, Battery Park City, Washington Square Park, Governors Island, the High Line, and Whitehall Ferry Terminal, and the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival to name a few. In 2011, the Company was selected by the NYC Arts Alliance as one of "seven Emerging Voices of 2011."
Founder/Artistic Director/Choreographer Naomi Goldberg Haas has extensive experience in the areas of concert dance, theater, opera and film. Among her credits are collaborations with The Klezmatics, composer Michael Nyman, and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tony Kushner. The native New Yorker holds an MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and, as a dancer, performed with Pacific Northwest Ballet.
Hudson River Dances is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council, and Council member Inez Dickens, 9th Council District, speaker Christine Quinn, Hudson Guild Adult Services, SPAR, a collaboration among the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department for the Aging, and the City's five local arts councils. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the Department for the Aging and Hudson River Park.
