Island Moving Co.’s third annual Great Friends Dance Festival will begin with a 30th Anniversary celebration for Newport, RI’s resident contemporary ballet company. “The World is Your Oyster” on July 13th will be a gala evening of dancing and delights held at the imposing Restoration Hall on the International Yacht Restoration School’s Thames Street campus in Newport. The evening will include an excerpt from Miki Ohlsen’s showstopping “Dracula,” with live music by the ballet’s composer Felix Ventouras. Dinner by Blackstone Caterers follows, with dancing to the music of New York’s Tin Pan Band and a live Fund the Future auction led by Sal Corio. The magnificent space will be decorated with sculptures by RI artist Mimi Sammis.
Attending the gala to wish the Company a happy 30th anniversary will be Channel 6 news anchor Karen Meyers and Trinity Rep actor Joe Wilson, Jr. Also attending will be many of the 30 dancers from across the country who are coming in to Newport to dance and create during the Island Moving Co.’s Great Friends Dance Festival. Performances will start the following evening, July 14th, at the Great Friends Meeting House at 30 Marlborough Street in the center of Newport and continue every night (excepting Monday, July 17) at 7:30pm through July 22nd. Patrons can purchase a Great Friends Festival Pass which includes two tickets to the after dinner dancing at “The World is Your Oyster,” three master classes during the week leading up to the Festival, and a ticket to every show, where each night is a unique program. The pass is 50 and is available on the Company’s website, www.islandmovingco.org, or by calling 401 847-4470. Tickets to the Great Friends Dance Festival are 5; the Festival pass has a value of 95.
The Great Friends Dance Festival includes open master classes, open rehearsals and post-performance conversations with the choreographers in the IMC studios on Washington Square and in the intimate and historic 1699 Great Friends Meeting House. The Great Friends Dance Festival is made possible through the partnership of the Newport Historical Society.
