4 PERFORMANCES: February 18 - 21, 2016

LEIMAY, an interdisciplinary ensemble comprising Ximena Garmica and Shige Moriya, announces the world premiere of borders at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), opening on February 18, 2016. Returning to BAM after its participation in the inaugural year of BAM’s Professional Development Program and its 2013 sold-out season of Becoming-Corpus, LEIMAY will present its sequel, titled borders, in four performances from February 18th through the 21st.

Sound, light, voice, and movement orbit, collide, fuse, and repel to create a hauntingly evocative landscape of bodies turned inside out. This mesmerizing performance is conceived and constructed by LEIMAY: Ximena Garnica & Shige Moriya, the duo behind CAVE, The New York Butoh Festival, and the Williamsburg SOAK festival. A sequel piece to the ensemble’s acclaimed Becoming-corpus, borders sets stillness against high physicality, and visceral vocalizations against sonic harmonies. Forms dissolve through walls of light and mutable axes of space. Shige Moriya and Ximena Garnica transform the stage into a hanging valley of shadows and swelling interferences, enveloping the audience in a universe at the thresholds of itself. The world premiere of borders coincides with the release of a publication tracing LEIMAY’s creative process for this piece.

borders is conceived and constructed by Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya. Choreographed by Ximena Garnica with an international ensemble of performers and dancers: Masanori Asahara, Andrea Jones, Derek DiMartini, Lindsey Mandolini, Jeff Shortt, and Emily Smith. Music is composed by Joe Diebes. Vocal Direction by Ximena Garnica and. Video programming and design by Shige Moriya. LEIMAY’s production team consists of Raul Zbengheci and Denise Shu Mei. In borders, LEIMAY assembles the talents of collaborators who hail from the United States, Latin America, and Asia.
