LEVYdance with Sidra Bell Dance New York

in Shared Concert

Acclaimed New York choreographer Sidra Bell and her company, Sidra Bell Dance New York, join San Francisco based LEVYdance to create an exciting new collaborative shared program at Dance Place on Saturday, February 2 at 8pm and Sunday, February 3 at 4pm.

For many choreographers, regularly creating new work, while supporting staff and company, is unsustainable artistically and economically. Through LEVYdance’s new program, AMP, Levy seeks to build an innovative alternative to the single choreographer dance company model that holds on to the individual identity of the artists involved. For AMP 2012, Levy was compelled by Bell’s prodigious gift for movement invention. While aesthetically quite different from his own, her choreography is similarly derived from a practice of creative intimacy and personal excavation with the dancer in rehearsal.

Bell has developed “twinworks,” one each for both LEVYdance and her own company, created side by side, existing in the same stage environment. Though twins, each piece has its own distinct personality, generated by the aesthetics and cultures of the companies creating and performing them. LEVYdance will also present 2008 audience favorite, Physics, as part of this collaborative program.

About LEVYdance

Founded in 2002 by Artistic Director Benjamin Levy, LEVYdance has flourished into an internationally recognized performing arts organization. The company and Benjamin Levy have received a multitude of awards and accolades including Dance Magazine's "Top 25 to Watch" and a San Francisco Bay Guardian Goldie Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement. The Washington Post describes Levy as "a stylish craftsman with a fierce heart and the daring to project it into movement.

The 2012-2013 season marks LEVYdance's tenth anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, the company presents The LEVYdance 10th Anniversary Year, An Ongoing Celebration; a year of performances and events celebrating LEVYdance's mission and achievements, honoring the supporters who have made the company's growth possible, and looking forward to an exciting future.

About Sidra Bell Dance New York

Sidra Bell Dance New York is a New York City contemporary dance company presenting innovative, provocative, and kinetic dance theater works. Bell is a sought after voice in contemporary dance with a strong female vision creating works that ignite the imagination and explore the complexities of the human condition. Bell excavates the psyche and themes that are life affirming. The company's repertoire is haunting, emotionally transporting, complex, articulate, sensual, and highly physical. The company has become known for atmospheric, unconventional, spectacular, and forward-looking works that push past dance's traditional vocabulary, venues, and boundaries. The vocabulary is elegant, fantastical, tonal, and darkly romantic with original themes and larger than life characters. The content is highly textural and plays with the natural and unnatural worlds as well as synthetic and organic tones.
